CORE 2: FACTORS AFFECTING PERFORMANCE

We have finally made it to Core 2, and I can honestly say, it's one of the more interesting units we'll cover this year, as well as being a unit that most people can relate to if they have ever played a sport.

To give you an idea of what we are covering the FOCUS QUESTIONS are below:
  • How does training affect performance?
  • How can psychology affect performance?
  • How can nutrition and recovery strategies affect performance?
  • How does the acquisition of skill affect performance?
As I said in class, usually I go through the focus questions in order. However, in the words of the great Jordan Tuiavi'i - sport is a mental game. So we're going to start with Question 2: How does psychology affect performance.

You have been given your long weekend homework to complete. Due to our time schedule - YOU MUST COMPLETE THIS TASK. Below are the links you will need for some of the activities in the booklet.

Managing Anxiety

Anxiety is predominantly a psychological process characterised by fear or apprehension in anticipation of confronting a situation perceived to be potentially threatening.

The ability of an athlete to successfully manage their anxiety levels impacts greatly on their performance. In soccer, the goalkeeper is continuously under pressure, even more so in a PENALTY SHOOT OUT. Below is a video that showcases the intense pressure of a penalty shootout, more so, it demonstrates successful anxiety management from the goalkeeper - Mark Schwarzer to get Australia through to their first World Cup in 32 years.

NOT managing anxiety

Sometimes, athletes let anxiety get the best of them and this can result in critical errors in performance. Usain Bolt's disqualification during 100m final at the 2011 World Championships is a clear example of this.
